Meta’s Measurement Shift For The Social-First Era

Measuring digital ads comes down to one core question: what outcomes did this campaign cause that would not have happened otherwise. Meta says incrementality tests like Conversion Lift are the best way to answer that, but they also acknowledge that fully adopting incrementality can take time.

To help advertisers better understand performance using the tools they already have, Meta is rolling out a few updates to measurement and attribution.

1) Click-through attribution is changing to link clicks only

Meta points out that measurement systems were largely built for a search-first world, where the main action is clicking a link. Social is completely different. People can engage by sharing, saving, liking, or clicking.

Historically, Meta has counted many types of actions as “clicks,” while many third-party tools primarily focus on website link clicks. That difference can create inconsistent reporting between Meta Ads Manager and third-party platforms.

To reduce that misalignment, Meta is updating click-through attribution for website and in-store conversions so it exclusively includes link clicks. Meta’s goal is for Ads Manager reporting to align better with tools like Google Analytics.

Meta says this change will begin rolling out later this month for campaigns optimizing for website or in-store conversions, and advertisers may see it take effect at different times. There is no change to how advertisers are billed.

2) Social actions will be captured under “engage-through attribution”

Meta also wants advertisers to see the value of social-native actions like shares and saves. With the new setup, conversions that come from shares, saves, or other non-link click actions will be included in what Meta previously called engaged-view attribution.

Meta is also renaming that category. Going forward, engaged-view attribution will be called engage-through attribution.

3) Video engaged-view is moving from 10 seconds to 5 seconds

Meta says conversion behavior is happening faster, especially on Reels, noting that 46% of online purchase conversions with Reels happen within the first 2 seconds of attention on video ads. Because of that shift, Meta is changing the definition of an engaged view for video ads from 10 seconds to 5 seconds.

4) Meta is partnering with third-party analytics providers

To help advertisers better understand impact beyond link clicks, Meta says it is starting to partner with third-party analytics providers such as Northbeam and Triple Whale to incorporate both clicks and views into their attribution models.

The big picture

Meta’s stated goal is to give advertisers “the best of both worlds”: click-through attribution that is more consistent with third-party tools, and engage-through attribution that shows the added value of social-native actions like likes, shares, and comments.
