Will Instagram Reels compete with TikTok?

User downloads for TikTok significantly spiked over the past few months and it looks like there’s competition on the way. Instagram has been testing a new feature that is similar to TikTok in Brazil, Germany,  France. Instagram Reels is a new way to create engaging content that can be posted to Instagram Stories or your feed. Just days after the Indian government banned the very popular app, Instagram started testing this feature in India as well. So, what do we know about Reels and when should we expect to be able to dive into this fun trend?  Much like TikTok, users will be able to choose from an extensive library of music or borrow another user’s audio to record their own 15-second clip. Instagram users will be able to showcase all of their Reels in a designated tab shown in the photo below: Source: later.com You’ll also have the ability to place your camera on a timer, adjust the speed of your video, and apply effects and AR filters to your video. Instagram hasn’t made it clear when this feature will roll out in the U.S, but we can’t wait to have another way to engage with our client’s audiences. Stay tuned and follow us on Instagram for any updates!

Instagram Features to Look Out For

Instagram has made so many changes and updates since the beginning of the year and just recently they announced new features to look forward to. Here are a few we’re excited about! Instagram Guides Instagram originally intended to create Guides for the travel industry, but they ultimately decided that it was best to focus on wellness and provide resources for people in need during these times. Think of it as a blog or a post with a lengthy caption, this feature will make it easy for you to follow through in the app and share with your friends. Instagram Shops Facebook will now allow small businesses to showcase and build online stores on Instagram. Mark Zuckerburg stated, “This is the biggest step we’ve taken yet to enable commerce across our family of apps.” Brands will be able to customize their online shop and customers will have a more streamlined experience when they shop directly from Instagram. In the press release, Facebook also stated consumers will be able to “browse selections from your favorite brands and creators, filter by categories like beauty and home, and purchase the looks you love all in one place.” That’s not all of the new shopping features. From February to March, there’s been a 70% increase in Live views. Soon they’ll be releasing IG Live Shopping so now you can purchase items while watching a brand’s Live. IGTV Ads Much like YouTube where creators can monetize their videos, Instagram has been testing out this feature for IGTV. Sephora, IKEA, and Puma are amongst the first brands to launch IGTV Ads. Creators who monetize their videos will receive a 55% share of all advertising, which is the industry standard. Badges  Creators will soon be able to take advantage of another stream of revenue. With badges on Instagram Live, viewers can purchase a badge from $0.99 to $4.99 in 3 different levels. When viewers purchase a badge, it allows the host to see who is supporting them. This feature will come in handy for fitness influencers, DJs, and many more users who have been hosting Live events and are accepting donations. Green Screen Effect Quarantine has had us very stationary, but Instagram has been working on a Green Screen Instagram filter so now we can be wherever we want in the world. AR Filters  Bring your photos and videos to life an apply AR filters to media from your camera roll. “We think this latest capability opens up fun, new ways for people to use AR effects to express themselves and reclaim meaningful or otherwise missed moments.”  These new Instagram features will change the way brands showcase themselves on social media even more. Which ones are you most looking forward to?

The Importance of Brand Transparency

Brand transparency can produce lifelong consumers. Earlier this month, Airbnb’s CEO, Brian Chesky was faced with the challenging task to lay off a fourth of his employees due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a very sincere letter, he explained how he arrived at the decision and how the company will support the employees moving forward. His actions were applauded by many including Forbes, MarketWatch, and Washington Post.   Other big companies have also used this method. How you manage your brand in a time like this can make or break your future success and your brand transparency says a lot. Knowing what and when to post on each platform is key in maintaining a loyal following. Not sure where to start? Developing smart content strategies is what we do! Some of our clients have been communicating with their followers and staying transparent over the past few months and we’ve seen nothing but positive responses. A Miami gem, and every local’s favorite independent bookstore, Books & Books has been keeping it real with their 142k followers and sharing store updates. Every other week, Mitchell Kaplan discusses the status of the store and future plans on IG Live. You can catch the last chat on IGTV. Laundrify has been committed to helping everyone stay healthy and clean while social distancing. The team offered discounts to apartment residents and contactless pickup and delivery. They even provide face masks that you can now customize yourself!  In response to COVID-19, we launched a Mindful Monday campaign for Bluehouse Salmon. Focused on health and wellness, we partnered with like-minded friends to bring their followers tips and tricks on maintaining their lifestyles at home. Need a workout, recipe, or gardening tips? Check them out on Instagram. Since in-person real estate showings were no longer feasible because of social distancing, ONE Sotheby’s International Realty hosted a major “Virtual Open House” where they invited agents to broadcast virtual tours through Facebook Live. This new way of presenting a property gave access to a much larger audience and even people from out of town tuned in.  How you decide to manage your brand is ultimately up to you, but remember that brand transparency will always increase consumer loyalty.

IG Creates New Restrictions for Diet and Surgery Content

Recently, Instagram has announced that the social media app will be restricting some of the content dealing with diet products and cosmetic surgery. Instagram is taking action after there has been a large amount of criticism regarding the negative impact promoted posts for dietary supplements, products and cosmetic surgeries have had. A younger demographic especially, has been at risk of poor mental health and body image based on this type of content. Under new regulations, advertisement posts that feature products to help with weight-loss or feature a cosmetic procedure will be hidden from users under the age of 18. Also, posts that make a commercial offer to users while claiming to be a “miraculous” way to lose weight will be removed from the app.  Instagram’s public policy manager claimed: “we’ve sought guidance from external experts, including Dr. Ysabel Gerrard in the UK, to make sure any steps to restrict and remove this content will have a positive impact on our community of over 1 billion people around the world – whilst ensuring Instagram remains a platform for expression and discussion.” The social media app wants to sustain a positive environment especially for younger demographics using it. They hope that these restrictions will reduce the amount of body and beauty pressure that society faces. Within the next few weeks, Instagram will try out a feature where users can report posts that they find goes against these new policies. After Instagram reviews the content it will be appropriately handled. Actress Jameela Jamil has been working with Instagram in the past year to make this change happen. Jamil expressed her happiness in a recent Instagram post stating that “this is an extraordinary win that is going to make a big difference.” Jamil hopes that this initiative will hold influencers more accountable for the sponsored content they promote to their followers. She has been quick to criticize celebrities such as Cardi B and the Kardashians for promoting detox tea to their following. Jamil even created her own body-positive platform on Instagram, I Weigh, which has started a movement and boasts more than 855,000 followers.  With these new social media changes, apps such as Instagram can hope for more positivity on their platform especially with the help of body positive content.

What is IGTV?

To all our savvy Instagram users, the social media platform has released the newest and greatest, IGTV. IGTV is both a standalone and within Instagram app. By now, most users might have noticed the new button on the top of their screens. IGTV is a new app that allows Insta-users to watch videos, up to one hour in length, from their favorite influencers and content creators. Instagram CEO, Kevin Systrom, stated the new app “is different in a few ways. First, it’s built for how you use your phone, so videos are full screen and vertical. Also, unlike on Instagram, videos aren’t limited to one minute.” The great part about IGTV is that while content is curated to your interests, users can still discover more by switching between ‘For You’, ‘Following’, ‘Popular’ and ‘Continue Watching’.

Instagram is making additional efforts on producing features for its demanding users, but the app might also be attempting to keep up with other social platforms such as, YouTube.  IGTV offers a whole new set of tools for current content creators and may also attract influencers and internet celebrities from YouTube. Mochee is already implementing content for our clients on IGTV as well as our own channel, be sure to check it out!

GEMS Festival Preview

The Miami International Film Festival’s fall event, held at Tower Theater in Little Havana, is almost here! GEMS recently announced its line up and the Mochees are excited. This week we went to a screening of all 14 films showing at GEMS this October – just wow.

The line-up includes features from Cannes, Berlin & Sundance Film Festivals, and a few films expected to receive Oscar noms, all while maintaining the international flavor typical of GEMS.

So which are our most anticipated films?

Brooklyn – Based on the novel by Colm Toibin and starring Saoirse Ronan, this romantic story is set in the 1950s between Ireland and Brooklyn.

Yona – Telling the true story of Israeli poet Yona Wallach, who entered into the literary scene determined to live her work, this movie is an emotionally charged drama.

It’s Now or Never – The biggest box office hit of the year in Spain, wedding plans go wrong in this hysterical romantic comedy.

We’ll be posting previews of the films on all platforms in the upcoming weeks. Follow MIFF on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date!

The 5 Social Media Terms Mochee Needs You to Understand

Facebook- What should be the main source of communication between you and your audience. An extremely effective way to present and spread information to the people you want to reach. Still a very popular platform despite what your 13-year-old daughter thinks. If you have a business, you need a Facebook.

Hashtag- a word or phrase preceded by a pound sign, used to funnel posts of a specific topic together. For instance, if you search #MocheeSocial on Google, you’ll stumble upon a goldmine of hilarious pictures, a slew of pop culture references, and a variety of pictures featuring any combination of the same 5 beautiful girls.

Twitter- A micro-blogging network of short blurbs with a limit of 140 characters. Arguably the most effective platform to conduct fluid conversations with users in real time through the use of a hashtag. Though many find it difficult, it is indeed possible (for the Mochees) to maintain a professional image on Twitter (for you).

Instagram- One of the most popular social media platforms. An online photo and video sharing community. If you have a large number of followers on Instagram, it’s likely your pretty popular in real life. You’ll find the most hashtag use on Instagram.

Impressions- The number of times a post from your page is displayed. The more impressions, the better. If you’re a Mochee client, this number is always, without a doubt, high.
